News traders either trade the release itself (pending orders above and below the pre-release range) or trade the aftermath (waiting for the initial spike to settle then trading the dominant direction). Both approaches require extremely fast execution and wide stops to survive the initial volatility.
Most retail brokers suspend normal execution during the first minute of a major release — spreads blow out, slippage is enormous, and stop losses can execute several pips past the intended level. News trading on a standard retail account is usually a losing proposition compared to waiting 5–15 minutes for volatility to normalise.
